The Week Ahead 30 July 2012

A momentous time for the Harriers on Tuesday at 7 - our very own Mini Olympics. Did you miss out on selection for Team GB? Well here's your chance to show those myopic selectors what they've missed. You can run, jump and throw to your heart's content and even get your name in the record books with a Chepstow Harriers Club Record for the 1 mile.
Back to earth from the big time with a good solid Thursday run along the Gloucestershire way, noted for fresh air and fun...

Handicap 3 Results

The results for tonight's handicap are now on the Handicap page, together with the cumulative points table and also the table showing all the times this year.

A warm evening, so several people ran slower times than before.

But the heat doesn't stop some people...fastest on the night was Kath with 33.10, and tonight's winner was Tosh!  Well done, a big improvement for you!

If you have done at least 2 races and you have at least 66 points then it's possible to win the series.  Roll on the last Handicap on 16 August!

Thanks Brenda, Syd, Bill S, Colin P, Mark, Andy and Kathryn for your help and support

The Week Ahead 16 July 2012

Meet at the LC at 6.30 to share cars to Pontypool Park for Tuesday’s LCL race, starting at 7.30. Postcode is NP4 8AT. This is a nice varied course that’s been revived from the early days of the LCL: a couple of hills but also lots of flat stretches including a lovely run along the canal towpath. Thursday’s run is also a revived route, taking in Sedbury, Tidenham churchyard, a run across the fields to Boughspring Lane, and a return along Offa’s Dyke. Maps available on the night. And a fitting climax to the week, July’s Club Champs race will be Sue and Gerry’s Waun Fach fell race. One of the most scenic events in the calendar with a delightful swooping finish along a gently descending ridge and a short sharp sting in the tail to the finish on Castle Hill. You get most of the climb over in the first half, and you can tell everyone you reached the highest point in the whole of the Black Mountains. Saturday at 2pm from the Castle Inn at Pengenffordd, only £2.50 on the day for 7 miles of good running surface. http://www.waunfach.fellrace.com/index.htm Watch this space for travel details

The Week Ahead 27 August 2012

We're again on the LC field on Tuesday, but those who tackled the session in the hayfield last Tuesday will know that there's next to no track visible. But our Coach of the Month Dave Somersall is nothing if not enterprising, and he'll be giving us an effective speed session no matter what.

A choice on Thursday: we did promise a timed mile and thanks to Syd the Wheel we'll have a carefully measured mile on the Link Road. Half of it will be downhill and the other half up, so we'll end up with an overall 'flat' course in that the start and finish will be a the same level.

If you don't fancy that how about a nice long run - the old route we revived a few weeks ago: down the dell, over the old bridge, up Deadman's Hill, turn right halfway up to Sedbury Lane, across the field and turn left to the rail tunnel, right to the Diving Ctre, past Tidenham church, and across the fields to Boughspring, backa along Offa's Dyke. Remember?

And finally, the Club Champs race on Sunday - the Hay Hill Raiser. A road race of 11.33 miles, with some up and down apparently, it starts at 11 and can be entered on the day.

Watch this space for meeting time.

Charmouth - possible rerun...

In case disappointed Charmouth trippers haven’t seen it, the latest news posting (afternoon of 7 July) on the Challenge website says:

Following the cancellation of both these races this morning, the organiser would like to thank all the potential runners and marshalls for their understanding. The weather was extremely poor and consideration needed to ensure the safety of all concerned including those who might have been called in an emergency situation. Please revisit this website next week for news on a possible rerun of the event and refunds.

We’ve emailed the organiser to say that we would be interested in the rerun. Whether we’ll have enough takers for a coach-full will depend on the suitability of the date I guess.

July Rose Inn Results

Here are the results for the July Rose Inn race:

The Week Ahead 9 July 2012

The 3rd Rose Inn on Tuesday. Parking is even tighter than usual so please meet at the LC steps at 6.30 to share cars.

Thursday’s run is our second venture along the new Wales Coast Path. The long run will cross the railway by bridge beyond Mathern by the blue navigation lamp: not the cross-golf course route that involves a dodgy trek along the line. We’ll put up a more detailed route, inc a shorter run,  by Thursday morn.

Curry Night at ‘Spoons after the run!

Sue and Gerry’s Waun Fach fell race is the next Club Champs race on 21 July. Vanessa and Gerry will be leading a gentle recce this Friday, meeting at the LC at 6 or at the race HQ – the Castle Inn, Pengenffordd – at 7. Bring a head torch.

Rose Inn 10 July

The July Rose Inn race takes place tomorrow: usual time (7:30pm), usual place (Rose Inn, Redwick). The third race in the 2012 series and your penultimate opportunity to get series points and go for a new 4-mile PB! Fast, flat, and the ideal antidote to all those gnarly, hilly, off-road shenanigans. It’s also this month’s counter for the East Wales Road Championship - so for all those contesting the East Wales series, don’t miss your chance to get a few more points towards the Champs!

We’ll still be working with our improvised facilities until the new Village Hall is completed later this month: registration will be in the pub and parking space is slightly more limited than usual. Please DO car share as much as possible.  Chepstow Harriers - meet at the LC Steps at 6:30 to share lifts.

100k at Rose Inn - Help Wanted

Seven Harriers have kindly volunteered to help with the timekeeping for the 100k ultra event around the Rose Inn course on Sun 22 July.

A few more are still needed. It won’t be too arduous, and we’ll be doing it in spells with rest and free refreshment breaks.

So if you’re available for part of the day please let me know or leave a Comment below. Thanks, Dick

Club Championship

James has updated everything up to 1 July so have a look at the cumulative standings pages if you want to see how people are doing.

Reminder that next Friday 13th I am organising a recce of Waun Fach, the July race. An idea of how many are likely to come would be helpful! So far only Jane Rymer has said she’s coming.  If there isn’t much interest then I am happy to postpone it to Wednesday 18th (I know a few can’t do 13th)

The Week Ahead 2nd July 2012

An exciting and sociable evening with our running colleagues at the Spirit of Monmouth club is scheduled for Tuesday evening. We’re having a joint  run around the Penallt side of the river from Redbrook, followed by a drink in the Boat. Meet at the LC to share cars or go straight to the car park at Redbrook, ready to run at 7.30. It’s about a 5 mile run marked by red and white tape. There’ll be a few maps of the route which’ll come in handy if the fairies remove any of the tape.  Then on Thursday we’re hosting that great favourite in the off-road  running  calendar, the Tintern Trot organised by Dave Andrews with help from lots  of  you. The race starts at 7.30 from the Wireworks Bridge. I think Dave has enough help but more is always welcome.  And finally, on Saturday it’s our annual seaside trip to Charmouth in Dorset. Not too late to put your name down (tell Dick) - a couple of spaces left. Barbecue courtesy of the Club: just pay your coach fare - £15 adults; £5 under 18s; under 3 free. Be at the LC car park at 9.50. We leave at 10 on the dot

Cotswold Relays 2012

This year we entered 4 mixed teams. As usual there was a lot of last minute shuffling between teams due to injuries but in the end all the teams were complete on the day. Generally the going was squishy, especially on leg 9 where runners endured a very heavy downpour near the start. Our 'A Team' won the mixed category and were 3rd team overall.
